Heroic Act Has Painful Consequences

Johanne dived in to save someone’s child and broke her pelvis in the process which caused years of pain...

In 1993, when I was seven months pregnant, I jumped into a lake to save someone’s child who was drowning, and this action broke my pelvis. I was bedridden until the birth of my baby; after the birth there was an improvement. Later I became pregnant again; this birth and pregnancy was okay. I became pregnant again and two months into this pregnancy my pelvis broke again. During the entire pregnancy I was confined to bed. I could not walk at all or even roll over in bed. After this baby was born, there was an improvement once again and I was able to do things in a limited way. Four years later the pelvis, for no apparent reason, broke again completely.

For the next two years I was in terrible pain all the time; I could never get any relief at all. In 2003, a major operation was done—a piece of bone in the form of a wedge was taken out of my left hip and hammered into the pelvis, the pelvis bone was completely fused, and plates and screws were put in. However, this operation was not successful. One long screw was penetrating my leg muscle and any movement caused excruciating pain. A scan done a year later showed that the pelvis was still in two pieces and the doctors wanted to open me up again to attempt another fusion. This, even if it had been successful, would have resulted in a very long recovery period, when I would have needed to lie on my side all the time. I was really dreading going through this operation again.

While waiting for this operation, in late September 2004, my husband brought me to a divine healing meeting in Lower Hutt where Weston Carryer was ministering. At that stage I could struggle on crutches for a few metres, but I could not put any weight on my legs at all. My shoulders could not support me very long and any movement caused such pain and agony so that I did not even want to move at all. The only time that I did not experience terrible pain in both my hip and pelvis was when I lay in a swimming pool. As soon as Weston had prayed and asked the Lord to do a creative miracle and join the two parts of my pelvis together, he asked me if I would like to walk. But I was too frightened to because of what I thought the consequences could be, and so I did not try. One month later I went for my scheduled operation. The surgeon opened me up, removed the plates and screws, and discovered that the bone had re-grown; my pelvis was as it should be, and so he just sewed me back up. Within two weeks all pain and restrictions had completely ceased.

Prior to my accident, ten years previously, I had been a very active person; now I am very active again. The other day, as I was racing alongside my young son as he was riding his bike, I was marvelling at what the Lord had done. The only activities I cannot do are star jumps. Lord, I praise You and thank You for Your wonderful works.
